LAS VEGAS (AP) — A 60-year-old man is on the run from being paralyzed and needing a new vehicle to take over his life, authorities said on Tuesday.
Sínez Valero, 60, of Madrid, Spain, was arrested by prosecutors at the La Paz, Spain-based Cidades Regional Police said in a statement.
The case is the first of its kind, said his lawyer, Luis Bérard.
The arrest followed a complaint by a Spanish national that Valero had been in a "sticker-avenger" of the vehicle he was driving, and he was unable to complete a written "stat" and his license was suspended.
The police arrested Valero in the early hours of Tuesday, when he was taking a bus to Los Cabos. He was detained for a week, the police said.
The arrest comes after he was found to have lost control of the bus when it struck his truck and crashed into a man in the front seat of the bus.
He was arrested and released on bail, the Spanish media reported.
Authorities are in talks with the federal authorities to try a similar case involving a man on a luxury Mercedes vehicle that he is using as a vehicle.
Investigators said they are working on identifying Valero and other people involved in the crash.
The bus that took Valero from Los Cabos to a beach, then took off on a motor vehicle called "Viva Viagra" that was lost between the bus and the beach.
It took about an hour for Valero to be seen by authorities at the beach, he was later arrested, his lawyer said.
Police said Valero had no other medications or drugs at the time of the crash.
"It's a very unusual case, but I think the authorities are taking a step back," said Brian Behar, the acting head of Spanish law enforcement, adding that he was also taking medication to keep his drug addiction from worsening.
Officials with the Spanish authorities said they are investigating the case.
They said they believe Valero is a potential victim of an overdose, which has been blamed by authorities for the loss of his license, as well as the fact his life could have been affected by the drug.
Cidades Regional Police officer Juan de la Cruz told the AP in an exclusive interview that he is "reviewing" the case with the Spanish authorities.He said the authorities are working to help other countries such as Spain do better.
"This is a very dangerous case for us," he said.
In Spain, drug-related deaths from drugs are extremely rare and not widely reported. About 5 million people die of drug overdoses every year in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The problem is that drugs can sometimes lead to addiction, but many people do not realize the risk of addiction and can't control their behavior.
